ISO 14001:2015 – ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
ISO 14001:2015 is an international standard that establishes the requirements for an environmental management system (EMS). Elements of the standard include planning, implementation, environmental policy, checking and management review and the PDCA process. The objective is for an organisation to establish an EMS that is integrated with the overall business management process. Continual improvement is integral to the model. This can be seen in many ways, such as improved communications and employee awareness, improved environmental performance, and improved emergency planning and response programs.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Firstly, give us a call and set up a no obligation meeting. We can explain thoroughly and clearly every step to reach the ISO 14001:2015 standard, including bespoke advice on how to integrate it into your current management system.
The steps required to reach standardisation include a publicly available environmental policy. It should be appropriate to the nature of the organisation and include commitments towards the prevention of pollution and continual improvement of the EMS.
Along with the policy, we can help you create and maintain procedures to identify significant environmental aspects and their associated risks and opportunities. Having a clear process and set of procedures to ensure compliance is consistent with the environmental policy, including legal and other requirements. Objectives and targets should also be documented and must be consistent with the goals of the environmental policy, including continual improvement and pollution prevention. All relevant documentation should be made easily available and useable in either a print or electronic version and communicated throughout your business. Organisations must continually monitor and document their environmental effects, and periodically review them, to ensure continual improvement and the effectiveness of the EMS. Management is responsible for an internal review of the EMS on a regular basis
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT TO OTHER STANDARDS?
ISO 14001 requirements are in line with the ISO 9001 standards as they apply to all sizes, shapes and types of companies and operations. They both require companies to state what they do, do what they state and evaluate their system.
However, analysis shows that the ISO 14000 series will impact companies more than ISO 9000. Other businesses are expected to begin asking their suppliers and contractors to have ISO 14001 certification, much the way they ask for ISO 9000 certification. This is to guarantee a commitment to high quality trade and environmental standards.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO MY ORGANISATION?
- Provides assurance to company management and employees, as well as external stakeholders, that environmental impact is being measured and improved internally.
- Helps organisations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste, which can also save you money.
- Gain a more competitive advantage and the trust of stakeholders.
- Improve company reputation and the confidence of stakeholders through strategic communication.
